Ottawa threatens COOL retaliation
It looks like a trade war is still looming, as Ottawa threatens “retaliatory measures” against the US in the ongoing dispute over meat labelling. Brookfield selling stake in Twin Rivers Paper
Brookfield Asset Management Inc. currently owns 51 percent of Twin Rivers Paper Company Inc., which operates mills in New Brunswick and Maine. Blue Wolf Capital Partners and Atlas Holdings have announced that they expect to close the deal to buy the controlling stake in Twin Rivers in about three weeks. Arsenic in poultry feed still an issue
Arsenic has been a part of poultry rations for decades, but it tends to pop up and then die down as an issue. The issue has come to the surface again after researchers at Johns Hopkins University found levels of arsenic in chicken that exceeded amounts that occur naturally, and warned that they could lead to a small increase in the risk of cancer for consumers over a lifetime. ... Stern mill gets tough rep

Atlantic halibut fishery now MSC-certified
Atlantic halibut can now carry the Marine Stewardship Council’s blue eco-label. Sweet maple estimates
Projections on Quebec's 2013 maple syrup harvest are looking good. Preliminary estimates show the results may even surpass the 96 million pounds produced in 2012. CFIA redefines local
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is changing the definition of "local", saying the existing rule was "too restrictive."
