Grass-fed Beef Research Coordinator - Truro, NS
Perennia is a fully integrated agriculture, food and bio-resource company. We work with producers and processors to offer new perspectives on growing, value-adding, incubating and innovating.

Specialists in our four divisions - Extension and Advisory Services, Quality and Food Safety, BioVentures and Facilities - work together to help our clients create new value. Perennia is a new entity combining the strengths of the former AgraPoint, Atlantic BioVentures Centre and AgriTECH Park. We have an opening for a Grass-fed Beef Research Coordinator based in Truro, Nova Scotia.

This is a full-time position for one year.

Reporting to the Director of Extension and Advisory Services, this position will be responsible for:

* Planning, organizing and implementing applied research and development initiatives to identify and demonstrate the best practices for grassfed, grass finishing and pasture rotational grazing management practices in Nova Scotia and to identify opportunities for improving genetic enhancement to grow and finish beef on low energy (grass & forage) diets.

* Organizing, co-ordinating and managing the Cape John Pasture Project with direction from the Cape John Pasture Project Committee. This will include coordination of activities, purchase and logistics of capital items and input supplies, data collection, entering and analyzing data, report writing, recommending future research requirements, initiating and maintaining key research relationships, management of approximately 140 head of beef animals, maintenance of electric fencing and watering systems and moving, handling and weighing cattle.

* Interacting and co-operating with a wide scope and variety of stakeholders including Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture, Nappan Experimental Farm, Nova Scotia Agricultural College and other stakeholders external to government. Time is required to develop, maintain and enhance networks with key organizations and groups to assist them in working through a range of production challenges to help industry to transition their farming practices and to inform them of new technologies that can benefit their operations and facilitate industry adoption.

* Managing other projects as directed by the Cape John Pasture Project Committee. On request, the incumbent will also assist individual businesses in identifying and solving problems of an operational / technical nature related to Genetic Enhancement of their herd as well as Grassfed and Pasture Rotational Management.

The ideal candidate will possess:

* Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture Sciences with a Major in Livestock or Plant Sciences plus two years related experience or a Master's Degree in Agriculture Sciences plus one year related experience.

* Demonstrated experience working with cattle and a high comfort level in handling cattle.

* Possess knowledge of the Nova Scotia livestock industries, as well as best practices for forage and pasture management and livestock health and nutrition.

* Strong presentation/writing and research/analytical skills are essential.

* Ability to work and communicate with producers.

* Efficiency in computer applications and modern office technologies is also required.

* Candidate must plan his/her own work in an independent work environment under minimal supervision.

The ability to develop successful relationships with government and industry associations is essential, as well as excellent organization, interpersonal, communication, facilitation, time management, computer skills and the ability to work in a team-based environment.
