| Date: 16-Jul-2012 |
The Atlantic Canadian Organic Regional Network (ACORN) presents the first annual Beginner Farmer Symposium on Monday, August 20th, at Tweedie Hall, Mount Allison University, in Sackville, NB. This new ACORN initiative will celebrate the future of local organic agriculture, featuring a full series of diverse and inspirational workshops and discussions for new, aspiring and experienced farmers. As the average Maritime farmer now approaches retirement, this event aims to connect new and experienced farmers from across Atlantic Canada to support the future sustainability of a local organic food supply.
This busy day will also feature the Beginner Farmer Trade Show, showcasing businesses and support services for new entrant farmers. Other activities will include Yoga for Farmers, The Small-Tools Show & Tell, Seed Swap, Beginner Farmer Video/Photo Booth, and more to be announced in upcoming weeks. Afterwards, participants are invited to Sackville’s historic Cranewood Estate to partake in ACORN’s Beginner Farmer Mixer, an evening social for all Symposium attendants, featuring delicious local organic food, drinks and live music.
“This event supports the development of ACORN's new farmer training program: The Grow A Farmer Apprenticeship and Mentorship Program,” says Lucia Stephen, Program Coordinator, “This development will be the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada, offering comprehensive curriculum-oriented education and community building activities for new entrant organic and transitioning farmers across the Maritimes.” The program will begin applications towards the end of 2012.
