Halifax, NS, will host the fifth International Conference on Ocean Energy (ICOE) in October 2014, slated to attract between 700-800 leaders and experts in the global marine renewable energy industry.
This will be the first time the event is hosted outside of Europe.
“This is the right time and place to be creating a focus on the marine energy industry opportunity in Canada, and to plan a marine energy event of this caliber,” said Chris Campbell, executive director of Marine Renewables Canada, the national industry association that led the bid submission. “With interest continuing to grow around the Bay of Fundy’s immense tidal power opportunity, enabling activities at FORCE, continued government support, and the only tidal feed-in tariff in the world, there’s no doubt that having ICOE in Nova Scotia will be a part of keeping Canada a frontrunner in this industry.”
FORCE executive director and Marine Renewables Canada chair Doug Keefe said, “This news underlines Canada's growing importance in the global marine renewable industry. Canada has the world's most powerful test site, the largest electrical facilities, the longest coastline, and a regulatory climate designed to encourage clean technology. The current RFP opening FORCE to tidal arrays shows our determination to help move this industry forward, and this international event will shine the spotlight on our collective efforts."
A trade mission of 22 organizations active in the marine renewable energy industry traveled to Dublin to support the bid, showcasing Canada’s strengths, skills, and capability to serve the emerging global industry.
ICOE 2014 is expected to attract the largest trade show to date, led by the Maritimes Energy Association.
“Atlantic Canada has a long tradition of industrial experience and expertise in the offshore, and having this event during the same week as the long-standing CORE event (Canadian Offshore Resource Exhibition and Conference), will enhance the collaboration and opportunities between the offshore energy sectors,” said Barbara Pike, executive director of the Maritimes Energy Association.
"This event has become the international focus on developing a marine renewables industry,” added Campbell. “Hosting it in Canada puts us front and centre on the world map with the intent that local economic activity and investment attraction develops a long-term international clean energy and economic opportunity.”
