This year's poor fall lobster prices are a wake-up call for the industry that, for the most part, people should have seen coming, says the head of a group that works to improve the fishery's markets and prices.
The industry knew markets are poor, with struggling economies in Europe and the U.S., said Geoff Irvine, executive director of the Halifax-based Lobster Council of Canada.

The Department of Health has stopped two Murray Harbour residents from peddling chickens following complaints they were selling the birds from the back of their vehicle.
Joseph Bradley, Manager of Environmental Health, confirmed there was a concern over the lack of refrigeration and potential risk to public health in this instance.

The federal government is working with the sheep and goat industries by helping to improve on-farm food safety
practices.
Parliamentary Secretary Pierre Lemieux (Glengarry- Prescott-Russell), on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz,

Canada's beef herd is the smallest it has been in 18 years, but the industry is showing signs of stabilizing, recent figures indicate.
Statistics Canada reported Tuesday that the number of cattle and calves on farms was down 0.1 per cent from the previous year, making national inventories the lowest since 1994.

| Finances are improving at the Atlantic Beef Products plant in Albany, P.E.I., according to the company's president.
Though he wouldn't reveal the numbers, Mike Nabuurs says the financial picture at the plant has steadily improved over the last three months.
The plant had been losing about $3 million a year. The province capped its funding for the plant this year at $1.5 million.

| North American cattle numbers on the decline |

| A joint inventory report by the USDA and Statistics Canada shows a two per cent decline in North American cattle numbers this summer.
The report pegs the total number of cattle and calves on boh sides of the border at 111.3 million head as of July 1, down two per cent from July 1, 2011. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 44.6 million head, were also down two per cent from a year ago.

PEI: The deadline for requests for proposals for the Buffaloland Provincial Park passed Monday without a single submission.
