| Newfoundland RCMP have launched an investigation into how a cow was shot and killed on Crown land on the island's west coast.
The animal was found dead in the Codroy Valley community of Cape Anguille on Wednesday.
Police have asked anyone who may have information to step forward, or contact the anonymous Crime Stoppers tip service.

| Bans on beef coming out of Parana State in Brazil are spreading.
Saudi Arabia, Egypt, South Korea, China, South Africa, and Japan are not buying beef from the region, after Brazil revealed the discovery of a cow with proteins that cause BSE.

| Pork and beef exports from the US to Russia could come to a halt, now that Moscow is requiring that the meat be tested and certified free of the feed additive ractopamine.
The US currently exports more than $500 million a year worth of beef and pork to Russia.

| Four facing charges over rare-breed sheep abduction |

| The CFIA says four people are being charged in relation to the abduction of 31 rare-breed Shropshire sheep that were under quarantine for suspected scrapie.
Michael Schmidt, Montana Jones, Suzanne Atkinson, and Robert Pinnell face criminal charges following an investigation into the removal of the sheep from an eastern Ontario farm back in April.

The XL Foods plant in Brooks, AB, which was at the center of the largest beef recall in Canadian history, has the green light to resume exports to the US.
The plant was shut down from Sept. 27 until Oct. 23 .
The facility produces nearly half of the beef processed in Canada, and more than 2,000 items were recalled throughout all the provinces and most states.

| A second bout of salmon anemia is suspected in a salmon farm on the south coast of Newfoundland, and the Salmon Preservation Association is renewing its call for land-based aquaculture.
The SPA's president, John McCarthy, says land-based aquaculture would lead to healthier fish, and benefit rural areas of the province.

| Close to 1,000 pigs from P.E.I. are being flown to China, in order to help two commercial pig operations get started there.
The Island is well-known for having pigs with good genetics and clean health. PEI has been shipping pigs to China for breeding purposes for about 10 years, but at 950 animals this is one of the larger shipments.

| Researchers at the University of Guelph say Canadians should expect the price of meat to increase by as much as 10% in 2013.
In their annual forecast, they predict that retail prices for beef and pork will increase by much more than any other foods.

A precautionary quarantine was put in place at the unnamed commercial facility in southern Newfoundland, after the possible discovery of infectious salmon anemia.
The CFIA is investigating, and says further disease control measures will be put in place and the World Organisation for Animal Health will be notified, if anemia is indeed confirmed.

| The US has until May 23 to change its Country-of-Origin Labeling (COOL) legislation to comply with World Trade Organization rules of trade.
