Keeping our horses healthy is a key component in having a sustainable equine industry, so biosecurity is important for both the individual horse and herd health.

| A new record was set at the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships this past weekend.
Calidoscopio, a nine-year-old Argentinean gelding, won the 1 ¾-mile Breeders' Cup Marathon - making him the oldest horse in history to win a Breeders' Cup race!

| Did you know that a Standardbred must retire from racing at the age of 14?
At the send of the season in Inverness on Sept. 30, two veteran racers (Take The Cheque and Mitchs Ceilidh) did just that.

| Southwest Ranches, Florida, is imposing high fines and jail time for anyone who butchers a horse for meat.
The new ordinance has been established in memory of a horse poached and butchered in the town earlier this year.
Northwest Ranches Town Administrator Andy Berns said that on Oct. 25, the town council unanimously approved the measure.

The Telstads have been importing Orlovs for several years, and brought over a stallion.

| A lawyer representing PETA says international champion dressage stallion Totilas is being treated unethically, and his owner and rider are in violation of German animal welfare laws.
Specifically, the claim says the horse suffers from forced hyperflexion when ridden, and from constant isolation in a box stall when not in training.

| The number of confirmed cases of equine West Nile virus (WNV) around the country has continued to rise.
Currently, the case total is the highest since 2007, when 468 horses were confirmed to have WNV.
